Italian mezzo soprano Anna Bonitatibus made her debut at La Scala, Milan in 1999. After winning several international competitions, she turned her attention to the study of the Baroque and Bel Canto repertoire and the appropriate vocal techniques for these periods. Her interpretations of the most important operas of Mozart, Handel, and Rossini have resulted in invitations to perform on Europe’s most prestigious stages as well as in the most important concert halls worldwide. Anna Bonitatibus has been involved in many CD recordings, her most recent being Semiramide – La Signora Regale with rare operatic arias and scenes from the 18th and early 19th centuries.
The soprano, who was born in Sheffield, is one of the leading Baroque singers of her generation. She has regularly performed with, amongst others, Philippe Herreweghe, John Eliot Gardiner, Ton Koopman and Rinaldo Alessandrini in concerts and operas and has taken part in the recordings of more than 40 CDs. Her international career has taken her to the Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Teatro Colon Buenos Aires, Sydney Opera House, Wiener Musikverein and Concertgebouw. She is a regular guest at the Bavarian State Opera and the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden. For the role of Anne Truelove in Stravinsky’s “The Rake’s Progress” she won a Grammy Award. In 2017 her recording with the Berliner Philharmoniker Orchestra and Claudio Abbado of the DVD The Last Concert was awarded the International Classical Music Award.
Currently she is substituting for the professor of Baroque music at the Hochschule for Music in Nürnberg and is focussing in concerts with her BlueShed ensemble on historical and contemporary improvisational art.
Violinist Anne Katharina Schreiber has been a partner of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, with whom she can also be heard as a concertmaster and soloist in concerts and on CD recordings, since 1988. She frequently performs with ensemble recherche, Akademie für Alte Musik, Kammerorchester Basel und Collegium Vocale, Ghent. She has been a member of the Trio Vivente for more than 20 years, and has played in various chamber music groups. Anne Katharina Schreiber teaches at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg and at the Ensemble-Akademie, Freiburg.
In addition to his cello studies in Hanover and Detmold, Guido Larisch started playing the Baroque cello in 1977. In the following years he played with many different ensembles, including the Ensemble Musica Alta Ripa and the Apponyi Quartet. More recently he has been invited to serve as a section leader and continuo specialist by various opera houses like the Hamburgische Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper, and Teatro Liceu, Barcelona. Guido Larisch has been a member of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra since 1989. Several of his CD recordings have won international prizes.
Kristian Nyquist’s artistic credo is to feel out the ‘New’ which is inherent in every work, and to express it in every performance as well as to eliminate strict categorisations. When planning his concerts he is able to draw on a wide-ranging repertoire, which includes solo and chamber music works as well as concert works from the 16th to the 21st centuries. His passion is 20th century as well as contemporary works. This has led to many premieres and first performances (amongst others the first Pan-American performance of ‘Tiempo para espacios’ by Christobal Halffter with the Amazon Chamber Orchestra in the Manaus Opera House in 2015) as well as to cooperation and artistic exchange with personalities like Violeta Dinescu, John Palmer, Peter Heeren, John Patrick Thomas, Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf, Roderik de Man, Michael Beil, Klaus Huber, Hans Werner Henze, Sidney Corbett, Wolfgang Rihm and many others.
His personal, at the same time always based on historical and academic study, style of lectures and interpretation is documented by numerous, in parts singled out as reference recordings, CD recordings for the labels Pavane (C.P.E. Bach Sonatas with Flute), Telos, Etoile Productions (J.-H. d’Anglebert Suites), Le Chant de Linos (J.S. Bach Goldberg variations) amongst others as well as various radio productions. Most recently Musicaphon released the albums “Ursprünge romantischer Klaviermusik“ (works by Clementi, Field and Chopin played on a fortepiano) as well as “cembalo avantgarde“ (live first recordings of works by Dinescu, Henze, Yun as well as works dedicated to Kristian Nyquist by Peter Heeren). In 2013, together with Sergio Azzolini and Ingo Goritzki, Kristian Nyquist was awarded an ECHO Classic Award for the recording of the oboe and bassoon sonatas of Devienne (Dabringhaus and Grimm).
As full-time lecturer for historical keyboard instruments and chamber music at the Hochschule for Music, Karlsruhe he applies himself fully to his teaching, also passing on his knowledge and ideas in various interpretation courses (International Handel Academy Karlsruhe, Rio de Janeiro Summer School, Villa Musica Foundation/Rheinland-Pfalz and others). He has also been a member of the jury at various competitions (amongst others at the German Music Competition in Berlin).
Kristian Nyquist was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Mannheim, and thanks to his parents, both piano teachers, experienced music at an early age, with both piano and violin lessons, later lessons in theory and composition, too. He enjoyed professional training with Huguette Dreyfus (Paris), who had considerable influence on him, as well as with Christine Daxelhofer (Hochschule for Music Karlsruhe), completed by courses with Colin Tilney, Bob van Asperen and Gustav Leonhardt. Bursaries from the DAAD and the Académie Internationale de Musique Villecroze, as well as prizes and awards at competitions, amongst others in Paris and Prag, are other additions to his artistic career.
Thomas Seedorf has been Professor of Musicology at the Institute of Music Informatics and Musicology at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe since the winter term of 2006/07. His research interests include, amongst others, areas of song history and analysis, performance practice and the history of interpretation of music as well as, in particular, the theory and history of artistic song. He is, amongst other things, a co-publisher of the Reger edition of works and project leader of the new Schubert edition. He is active as the chairman and artistic director for the INTERNATIONAL HANDEL ACADEMY, Karlsruhe and is responsible as editor for the Publications of the International Handel Academy, Karlsruhe.
Born in Göttingen, Ullrich studied with Leonard Hokanson, Claude Frank and Rudolf Buchbinder. He has lived in Frankfurt am Main since he was 8 years old. Ullrich’s diverse repertoire includes more than 400 works from all epochs and styles since Bach.
Concert tours as a soloist, chamber musician and vocal accompanist have taken Christoph Ullrich to many European countries, South and North America, Asia and many international festivals including the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Rheingau Music Festival, Beethoven Festival in Bonn, Ludwigsburg Castle Festival, Bach Week Ansbach, Bach Festival Leipzig, Schubertiade in Feldkirch, the Heidelberger Frühling, Mozart Festival in Würzburg, Mozart Festival Schwetzingen, Cambridge Music Festival, Lower Saxony Music Days, Brandenburg Summer Concerts and North Hesse Music Summer. He has also performed with major orchestras.
His CD recordings include piano works by Bach, Mozart and Schubert, the musical literary programmes - The Four Elements ("Water," "Fire," "Air" and "Earth"), "Night," "Head of Janus" and "Dream Fever" - the complete works for violoncello and piano of Friedrich Kiel with the cellist Hans Zentgraf and Franz Schubert’s “Winterreise” with Matthias Horn, baritone.
Since 2011 Ullrich has been making CD recordings of all of Domenico Scarlatti’s 555 sonatas together with the Tacet label. For the first time the series can be heard in the original order as intended by Scarlatti in groups of 30 sonatas. 228 sonatas have been recorded up to April 2018.
Dr. Henning Bey studied musicology, history of modern German literature and classical archaeology at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg as well as historical musicology at King’s College, London. Magister Artium in 1995, in 2003 doctorate and award of the title Dr. phil. with an inter-disciplinary genre study of Haydn’s and Mozart’s symphonies after 1782 in the context of contemporary music theory, aesthetics and a canon of fine arts. From 2000 to 2006 he was research assistant for the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe in Salzburg; from 2006 to 2015 he was responsible for dramaturgy, press and public relations at the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. He has been the director of dramaturgy at the International Bach Academy, Stuttgart since 1st July 2015.
Works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Friedrich Handel and Domenico Scarlatti
Deborah York has passed on the experience gained in a 30 year career at the forefront of the Baroque music movement to the younger generation, as a lecturer at the INTERNATIONAL HANDEL ACADEMY, within the framework of the HANDEL FESTIVAL. Now the British soprano is also presenting herself to the huge festival audience. Her programme once again confirms her reputation for being a talented dramaturg. It brings three titans of the late Baroque together, they were born in the same year, but they took very different paths in different corners of Europe.
The participants of the academy will present instrumental and vocal works by three important composers of the high Baroque: Domenico Scarlatti, Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel. This opens interesting parallels between the composers. As well as well-known piano works by Scarlatti and Bach there will be many rarities in the programme, amongst these, little known Italian cantatas by Scarlatti and Handel. For this the participants of the instrumental courses will perform with young singers.
In order to give as many course participants as possible the opportunity to present their skill in public, two final concerts with different programmes are planned. The first concert will take place on 02/03 in the Christuskirche and includes, fitting to the venue, mainly sacred music. The second final concert of the academy on 03/03 will be in the Karlsburg in Durlach, which is an ideal venue for a secular programme including instrumental works, cantatas and excerpts from operas.

Each of the three composers whose music is the focal point of the Handel Academy 2019 is the topic of a discussion round in which lecturers, guests and artistic directors of the academy will discuss central questions concerning the musical interpretation, musically supported by participants.
On February 27, Thomas Seedorf will talk to the cembalist Kristian Nyquist and the Frankfurt pianist Christoph Ullrich about the challenges involved playing Domenico Scarlatti’s music for keyboard instruments on historical instruments and on modern concert grand pianos.
On February 28, Henning Bey, dramaturge of the International Bach Academy Stuttgart will discuss with Anne Katharina Schreiber and Guido Larisch the specific features of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music for solo string players. On March 1, together with Michael Fichtenholz, Deborah York and Anna Bonatibus will look at the question in which relation composed affect and tonal transposition are in Handel’s music. The discussions will be preceded on February 26 by a lecture by Thomas Seedorf which will provide an overview of the lives and working conditions of the three composers Handel, Bach and Scarlatti.
